Understanding Hospice

We’re here for you

The mission of NMVNA Hospice is to improve quality of life by easing pain and providing comfort.  We do not replace the family in caring for a loved one. Instead, using a team approach, we provide the primary caregiver with well trained support. A non-profit organization, NMVNA Hospice has provided care to patients and families for over 25 years.  NMVNA Hospice services are covered by Medicare and most private insurers.

You have choices

NMVNA Hospice works with patients and families to develop individualized plans of care
that meet their needs. Our team provides services anywhere our patients live:

  • at home
  • in an independent living complex, assisted living residence or skilled nursing facility
  • in the hospital

What to expect from Hospice Care

Your main contact is a registered nurse who is trained to help alleviate pain and manage
symptoms, and will provide education and training to caregivers.  Other members of the Hospice team who will provide experienced and compassionate care include:

  • Hospice Physician
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapist
  • Medical Social Worker
  • Homemakers
  • Dietitian
  • Pharmacist
  • Chaplain
  • Massage Therapist
  • Trained Volunteers
  • Bereavement Counseling

Comfort is our priority

NMVNA Hospice oversees the provision of medical equipment and supplies and provides medications necessary for symptom control, pain relief and comfort as related to the terminal diagnosis.  Your nurse can answer medication-related questions.

We care for you, body & spirit

Often, patients are concerned about the well-being of their loved ones after Hospice services end. We provide specially trained grief and loss counselors to provide expert, ongoing support during the Hospice care period and afterwards.

How to arrange for services

Most patients are referred to Hospice by their physicians or other healthcare professionals. Early referrals are encouraged so that the patient and family can receive the full benefits of the Hospice program.
